Mathematics of posture in Buddha’s Meditation
Today around the globe meditation and yoga have flourished outreaching every number and affecting every life in positive ways. There is no doubt meditation being a scientific technique that evolved in ancient times. The careful studies reflect the science and mathematics in meditation.
Many times you have heard the meaning of yoga as union or alignment but every teacher so far failed to explain this in scientific terms. Myriad doesn’t even have an Idea of how the Buddha’s meditation postures even excelled ahead of this union or alignment. Yoga came into existence five hundred years later Buddha passed away. The real facts revolve around the entire teaching of Buddha from where different strands are taken out to further develop into separate techniques.
Mathematical proof
Before I start explaining this mathematically, have you ever questioned yourself, how they always say yoga means union or alignment without knowing? Or how Buddha’s meditation posture excelled that too? The picture of Buddha here depicts the posture of the full lotus position in meditation. The posture includes the straightened spine and legs folded forming the lotus posture.
Let’s simplify even further in form of shapes. The straight spine can be seen as perpendicular dividing the body into two half-right-angle triangles. Draw even closer observation that the spine is perpendicular and the base is formed by legs in folding position. Therefore, we can represent this by right-angle triangle formulae (A [square] + B [square] = Hypotenuse [square]) which can be written as Sin2$ + Cos2$ = 1 and we all know unity or union in mathematics means “one”. Hence mathematically it is unification or union or alignment. The reason for lotus posture better than cross leg is that it locks the body in a straight position making it still, which is of utmost importance to gain Insight.
Way beyond Union or Alignment Buddha
Now if we see Buddha’s hand posture overlapping each other kept in the center forming the “U-shape” which represents the shape of a parabola. About parabola, everyone knows that points on the curve are always at symmetry from the centerline of focus represented by spine or straight body. This symmetry is the backbone of meditation ahead after the union or unification of mind has happened. The entire parabola system supports equanimity. The mind and body general characteristics we observe in meditation are impermanence (rise and fall), suffering, and non-self while keeping a balanced state of mind not reacting to it. Therefore, the posture of the parabola formed by hand only strengthens the equanimity.
Take Away
Meditation is scientific and close observation reveals all the science and mathematics behind it. There is no place for blind faith or superstition to achieve the liberation of the mind. Meditation is the process of finding ultimate inner truth and truth cannot be explored through any approximation or faith.
